The magic and wonder of fairy stories have inspired children from generation to generation. Many are so well known, that the important lessons that they teach may often be forgotten. These are perennial tales–cropping up in different cultures in different guises, but relating the same adventures. Yet all have the power to entertain and spark interest in young minds.
In this collection, twenty-four classic fairy tales are brought together for a new generation of children to enjoy. With some minor adaptations to some of the tales to suit our times–where girls don’t always rely on the ingenuity of their brothers or courageous princes to resolve their dilemmas–the plots stay faithful to the originals.
Many of the stories are very well known. A few chosen for this collection are lesser known, but are sure to be enjoyed by any young listener hearing them for the first time.
Written to be told as more substantial stories using vivid language, rather than with the younger-age headlines of a picture book, these tellings should appeal to children aged from around 4 to 10 years of age. Care has been taken to choose language that doesn’t shy away from presenting the plot-lines of the stories as they are, but which doesn’t unnecessarily scare or sensationalise either. It’s then time to visit distant kingdoms, risk encounters with devious wolves, and go wandering in the deepest of forests. It’s time for laughter, wide eyes, whoops of joy and surprise–let the storytelling begin!
